A new custom dialog for SPSS Statistics,
General Open, has been posted to the SPSS Community
website. This is just a convenience. There is no new functionality.
If you are like me, you get very tired of navigating the File > Open
> something or File > New > something menu items. The General
Open custom dialog appears directly on the File menu. You pick a
file, and it does the right thing based on the file extension. It
can open sav, Excel, sps, and spv files and create a new Data Editor, syntax,
or output window all from a single dialog box. You could, of course,
create toolbar buttons for all the file types on all the window types,
but that takes a lot of toolbar space, and this dialog allows you to assign
a dataset name at the same time.
General Open requires the Python Essentials and at least version 18 of
Statistics. It can be downloaded from within Statistics using the Utilities
menu in version 22. For older versions you can download it from the SPSS
Community website (www.ibm.com/developerworks/spssdevcentral)
in the Extension Commands collection.
