" I've tried contacting IBM reps and they have not
been very familiar with this piece of software."

Tells me enough!

Hello everyone,

I have several questions regarding the SPSS Data Collection Data Entry
software. We are looking to purchase it to aid in data collection, entry,
and clean-up.However, our university's license does not cover this module
and therefore we would have to purchase individual licenses (which are
expensive). Does anyone have experience using this software that would be
willing to speak to me in a little more detail about its capabilities and
issues? It would help in assessing whether this is a worthwhile software to
purchase. Unfortunately, I've tried contacting IBM reps and they have not
been very familiar with this piece of software.

Best,

Will Martinez

If you are willing to spend two days to learn how to use/write syntax
for checking rules (to my mind much better than the graphical tools
offered by SPSS Data Entry) you should have a look at EpiData Entry:

http://www.epidata.dk/index.htm

and

http://www.epidata.dk/download.php

Note: Although the "EpiData Entry Manager" is being developed, I
recommend to use EpiData Entry version 3.1 (build: 27jan2008). You also
will need the accompanying manual:

http://www.epidata.dk/php/downloadc.php?file=epidata_pdf.pdf

EpiData allows to export data to SPSS (create syntax files to read and
define data) and Stata. Especially useful are its possibilities for
double entry (allows to compare values in second file with what was
already entered in first file directly at entry).

If you decide to use EpiData (it is free), I think it is really
worthwile to consider seriously a donation to support further
development (note that I'm not affiliated to EpiData in any way)!

In addition to the others' good advice, I suggest when you find someone who is using it you visit them on site to see a demonstration.  Two or more site demos would be better than one.

Another FREE alternative to consider is CSPRO from the US Census Bureau.
It is used far and wide and even has user groups.
