There are some new extension commands now available from SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral). There are some other new items and updates as well.
Here is a list of the latest additions. SPSSINC RANFOR and SPSSINC RANRED. These R-based extension commands provide procedures for random Forests of classification and regression trees. They are based on the R randomForest package. SPSSINC RANFOR estimates trees. SPSSINC RANPRED can be used to make predictions for new data using an already estimated forest. The package includes the extension command syntax definition and implementation and dialog box interfaces for these commands. This package requires SPSS Statistics 17. Details are in the readme file. SPSSINC RAKE. This Python package provides an extension command version of the rake.py module that has been available for some time. With version 17, you can use this as an extension command, and it includes a dialog box interface. SETSMACRO is an extension command that can translate SPSS Variable Sets into a form that can be used in syntax. Variable Sets are used in the SPSS frontend to control what variables appear in dialog boxes and Data Editor windows. They have no syntax counterpart. This extension command extracts the contents of one or more sets and can define a macro that stands for those variables write the macro definition or the list of variables to a syntax file. SETSMACRO works with version 16 or later. The implementing function, however, can be used with older versions back to 14. The spssaux2.py module has been updated to provide a tallydates Python function. This function produces a new dataset from data in a date interval at specified increments. It works with version 15.0.1 or later. We have added an example on writing .NET plug-in applications in VB for version 17. Besides these new items, there are maintenance updates to SPSSINC MODIFY OUTPUT, SPSSINC TOBIT REGR, SPSSINC COMPARE DATASETS, and SCRIPTEX (an extension command for version 16 or later for handling parameters and return values for the SCRIPT command.) We have also updated the article "Writing SPSS Extension Commands" to reflect the new features of version 17 (posting in progress). We hope that you find these items useful. Jon K. Peck SPSS Inc.
