SPSS FILE SIZE

jkim59
Dear SPSS experts,
I have a spss file. The file size is 96,442 KB. When I open this file and save it as a new name, the file size is reduced to 25,000KB. I have no idea what happens.
Am I losing the data? Please give me any answer.
Thanks!

Is the original file UNCOMPRESSED and the new version COMPRESSED?  In the FM, look up SAVE > COMPRESSED, UNCOMPRESSED, and ZCOMPRESSED.  As it says there,

"Only one of the subcommands COMPRESSED, UNCOMPRESSED,or ZCOMPRESSED can be specified per SAVE command.  COMPRESSEDis usually the default, though UNCOMPRESSED may be the default on some systems."

HTH.

UNCOMPRESSED is the default on all systems in living memory.  The CSR was recently updated to reflect this.

If there is any doubt about data loss, I would suggest using the Compare Datasets feature introduced in V20 or 21.  That will confirm that the old and new files have the same data and metadata.

Oops, yes.  I'd like to blame the spelling checker, but it didn't know "uncompressed".  Maybe it should be ununcompressed.

How can I check the file with compressed or uncompressed?
I would like to compare datasets. Is it possible to use SPSS V22?

i thought this might because of the "compressed"Subcommands in the 'SAVE' command.
