SPSS Locale

Georg Maubach
Dear Listers,

We need to process data in Thai. The data is stored in an SPSS data file
and shall be processed there as well as being exported to MS Access
using the ODBC interface.

In both programs (SPSS and MS Access) the open-ended questions shall be
displayed correctly. The command SET LOCALE can set the locale.

We need to know what the correct locale name for Thai is and which
Windows font can display Thai within the SPSS data editor.

Can anybody help?

Best regards

Re: SPSS Locale

Peck, Jon
set locale=thai.

In order for this to work and to have fonts that support Thai, which as you probably know has an extremely complex writing system, you will need to install Windows support.  In Regional and Language Options in the Control Panel, go to the Languages tab.  You will see a checkbox "Install files for complex script and right to left languages (including Thai)".

Once that is done, you can pick a Thai font in SPSS.  Arial MS Unicode supports Thai, but that font is extremely large and takes a lot of memory, so use it only if you have to.  Go through the fonts dialog box to see what scripts are supported by different fonts.  Jasmine is one, but I don’t know which ones are most appropriate.

It is difficult/impossible to write Thai in a fixed pitch font, so you might not find an appropriate Thai font for text displays that rely on fixed pitch, but there are very few places in SPSS where you would need that.

HTH,
Jon Peck
