SPSS/PASW and Macs... will v17.2 work with Snow Leopard?

Howie Harshaw-2
Hi Folks,

Apple will be releasing the new version of their OS shortly (called Snow Leopard).  Has anyone had an opportunity to test SPSS/PASW 17 with the new OS?  Will SPSS/PASW 17 work seemlessly, or have some issues been identified that will be addressed in a forthcoming patch?

Thanks for any help,

- Howie

Hi Howie,

Below is a resolution that gives the status of SPSS/PASW Statistics with Mac OS 10.6.

David Nichols

Resolution number: 85784

Problem Subject:  Will PASW Statistics work with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X version 10.6)?

Problem Description:  Apple has announced the next major version of Mac OS X, 10.6 "Snow Leopard", will be available for purchase on August 28th . I need to know, will current versions of PASW Statistics run on "Snow Leopard"?

Resolution Subject: At this time, a move to Mac OS X 10.6 should coincide with an upgrade to PASW Statistics 18.

Resolution Description
This morning Apple announced the next major version of Mac OS X, 10.6 "Snow Leopard", will be available for purchase on August 28th.

One very important point: PASW Statstics 17.0.x (and earlier) will not run at all on Mac OS X 10.6. This is due to certain classes in Java moving between Java 1.5 and Java SE 6. Because Mac OS X 10.6 only ships with Java SE 6, Statistics 17.0.x (and earlier) will not run. This may be an issue for customers that have 17.0.x and want to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6. At this time, a move to Mac OS X 10.6 should coincide with an upgrade to PASW Statistics 18.

In preliminary testing with pre-release seeds of Snow Leopard we have seen that PASW Statistics 18 runs very well on 10.6. In fact, there are a couple areas in which 10.6 is better for Statistics than 10.5:

Execution speed: Given the same Mac hardware and Statistics version/build, We've informally benchmarked Statistics 18 to be about 14% faster on 10.6 than 10.5. This is due to Apple optimizing many of the OS subsystems in 10.6, including Java SE 6.

Startup: In prior releases of Statistics we had a startup issue realted to Mac OS X, 10.5. This is detailed in Support Resolution 79927. Apple has fixed this issue in 10.6, and we've not seen further instances of this startup issue on later 10.6 pre-release seeds and PASW Statsitics 18.0.

Specific to running PASW Statistics 18 in 64-bit mode: Statistics 18 will run by default in 64-bit mode on both 10.5 and 10.6, as long as one is on 64-bit capable hardware. If a user has a system with a Core 2 Duo or Xeon processor(s), they are 64-bit capable.

At this time, a move to Mac OS X 10.6 should coincide with an upgrade to PASW Statistics 18.
