The IBM SPSS Statistics team is running
a survey of our users and clients. This survey is your opportunity
to tell us what you like and dislike about the product, what you would
like to see in the future, and where you think our priorities should be
for future releases. The survey should only take about 5 -10 minutes.
If you know others who use IBM SPSS Statistics, please feel free
to forward the link below to them. The more information we have,
the better we can make the product. The survey will be available
until February 8.

I have recently had a revelation about SPSS. (Maybe I’m a bit slow, and everyone knows this) It seems to me IBM are trying to do something very difficult. They have taken an academic statistical package, and are gradually re-engineering it as a predictive analytics package for business users. The increasing use of fancy output diagrams of models (where academics prefer tables) now makes sense to me. I am wondering whether this dual-user strategy is sustainable in the long-term, or whether it would be better to market two versions of SPSS – a cheaper one with an ‘academic’ interface, and a more expensive one for business users? As to what Id’ like – easier integration with R. Why the restriction to a specific version of R? I have R3.1 and SPSS 22 uses R2.7 I think. Hi Garry,
The Statistics/R integration is restricted to a specific major version of R due mainly to engineering and testing issues. We have to build the R plugin using version-specific header files from the R distribution. Each version of Statistics uses the latest R version that is available and stable at the time we have to make our development cut, allowing time for our own testing. Statistics 22 uses R 2.15.x The specific R version rarely matters, although R3 was something of an exception, and you can have multiple version of R installed on the same computer - I have six, although each Statistics version is tied to one specific R version. Thanks John. Yes it is R3 that was giving the problem. Is SPSS sensitive to the 32-64 bit difference in R? I generally use 64 bit software, but I am forced to use 32-bit R3 for compatibiltiy with rJava. Garry From: Jon K Peck [mailto:[hidden email]] Hi Garry,
