I have been told that Windows XP cannot use more than about 2 or 4 MB of
SDRAM. Thus, if one intends to purchase a pc and install XP instead of Windows 7 or 8 one would be wasting money to purchase one that has more than 4 MB SDRAM. This in turn makes me wonder about SPSS. Does SPSS make use of the full memory potential of a machine, or is it limited in the amount of SDRAM it can use? More importantly, since I have version 15, is version 15 of SPSS limited to the amount of SDRAM it can use? Someone had responded to me privately in a previous question I had. At the time I needed to know if version 15 will work in the Windows 7 operating system. The person said they have Windows 7 and it does work. I just discovered their is another complication. Will it work in a 64-bit operating system or will it only work in a 32-bit? The nature of 32-bit app memory addressing
means that a 32-bit SPSS version such as 15 cannot use more memory on a
64-bit system than on a 32-bit one - 2 or under some circumstance 3 GB.
However, since Windows XP is similarly limited, using a 64-bit OS
with more RAM will improve overall throughput when multiple apps are running.
I have V15 installed on my recently acquired 64-bit Win7 system, and while I have not tested it extensively, it seems to operate just fine except that it doesn't like the Win7 color model. Win7 switches into a basic color mode automatically when I run V15. I must say, though, that switching to a 64-bit version of SPSS Statistics running on a 64-bit OS with lots of memory (16GB) is like night and day with all the other apps I have to have running at the same time.
