I'd like to know whether others are having this problem or whether its
just me (although I had the same issue on 3 different machines I've tried it on). Open SPSS (I'm using 17.01) and enter some data values into the data editor (one column, 5 cells values will do). Perform a 'save as' saving as an excel version 2007. Exit SPSS. Open the excel file in excel. Copy the entire set of cells with data (ctrl-c), then move to a new/blank worksheet and perform a paste (ctrl-v). I get an error message noting excel cannot paste the data. Stranger yet, redo the copy & paste & it works the second time. When I export data from SPSS to excel in earlier versions of excel, I do not have this problem. I have reported this to SPSS & had a response (see below) but I want to know whether others are having the same problem to rule out my local environment, thanks. David SPSS tech support: David, More likely that after the exporting to excel is complete and you able to see the exact data in Excel, spss is no longer involved. If you are having problem copy from excel to a new excel you are best to contact Microsoft for support. The troubleshooting we can help is when you are having problem export from spss to Excel. Even though you are thinking that this process is working in the early release of spss, but the process you are doing about copy / paste is out of spss. It is between copy / paste from excel data to a new data within excel. You can try to copy and paste from spss to excel but when doing copy / paste from excel to new excel data sheet, that’s more with Microsoft Excel not spss. Hello David and all,
SPSS Development has looked at this issue further and it seems that SPSS may be adding noise to the Excel file in a way that affects the subsequent cut-and-paste operations within Excel. A product defect has been filed and this will be investigated further. David, your Technical Support case has been reopened and you should be hearing from your support representative shortly. In what may be a related issue, I have in the past reported that SPSS
16.0.1, and now 17.0.1, will not paste properly into Excel X SR1 (Mac OS). For instance, a correlation table pastes into a single column in Excel. The SPSS response was that this must be an Excel problem, but now perhaps there is some evidence that SPSS may be the problem? regards, Ian. Ian D. Hi Ian,
I could not find a record of this problem, but a colleague in Technical Support will be investigating this. As a general rule, the File->Export menu is a surer way to move a table from SPSS output to an Excel file, so I suggest trying this approach. Let us know if this approach is more successful for you.
