Hello everyone,
When I try to save a data file in SPSS the following error pops-up: "the attempt to save the data file has failed because the disk is full, an I/O error has occurred, the variable dictionary is invalid, or the task was interrupted." This happened a few times after I open an excel file in SPSS and try saving it! Has anyone faced this problem? Is there a way around? It happens mostly when the excel file is large. Thank you! I am using SPSS 16. Even if there is lot of space in my computer as well
as our server, the file still doesn't get saved. The problem is interesting because if I have 2 files same size in excel, once I open both in SPSS, one might successfully be saved while the other might not. Not necessarily, the first file I try to save gets saved! I faced this problem only 2-3 times earlier. -----Original Message----- From: ViAnn Beadle [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 12:22 PM To: Suvash Dhakal Subject: RE: SPSS error Not "right" permission but WRITE permissions. Is this an issue with only one particular SPSS data file or all files? What kinds of documents do you save to the server and how do you save them--by copying them using file commands outside of applications or applications themselves? You have to provide lots more information than you have and you need to broadcast it to the list for more help. -----Original Message----- From: Suvash Dhakal [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 10:18 AM To: ViAnn Beadle Subject: RE: SPSS error ViAnn, I mean disk space. I don't have administrative right for the computer, but someone with one can help me if I need. As for the server, I don't know what you mean by right permission, But I can save documents to my server, and delete if unnecessary. -Suvash -----Original Message----- From: ViAnn Beadle [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 12:14 PM To: Suvash Dhakal Subject: RE: SPSS error You mean disk space? Can you provide details on the syntax used to save the files.

I used the pull-down menus...In SPSS, I use the following link:
File>Open>Data and select Excel as "files of types". Once the data is open is SPSS, I click File>Save to save the file. But, in this case, when I give a name to the data file and save it, the following error pops out: ""the attempt to save the data file has failed because the disk is full, an I/O error has occurred, the variable dictionary is invalid, or the task was interrupted." Thank you. It is the phrase 'on the server' might be the clue to the problem - we have suffered this error intermittently for at least the last three versions and it is almost impossible to tie down as it depends on the size of the file ( smallish ones are more prone than large files ) and also on the load on the server and / or the network. We have encountered it most frequently with large class of students who tend to work with smallish files. Every time we think we have a 'recipe' to report to SPSS the problem cannot be replicated - our work round is to save to the local hard disc and then copy up to the server outwith SPSS !!
