SPSS for tablet vomputers

Margaret MacDougall
Hello

I would be most interested to learn from list members of their experiences of using SPSS with tablet computers. What has or has not worked well for you in terms of tablet computer model, choice between Android and alternatives,  and  discovery of a free or low-cost version of SPSS for tablets?

Many thanks in advance

Best wishes

Margare

Re: SPSS for tablet vomputers

Margare,

I use a Microsoft (MS) Surface Pro 2 and it works very well with SPSS.  I have the 8 GB RAM – 256 GB storage version.

The Surface Pro 2 has full Windows 8.1 on it, though, not just the RT version (RT is Microsoft's tablet operating system).  What can be confusing is that MS also sells the Surface 2 (notice there is no "Pro" in the name).  The Surface 2 is their tablet-only operating system version.

Before upgrading to the Surface Pro 2, I had the Surface 2.  The Surface 2 (tablet OS) will not run SPSS, so I set up a remote desktop connection to my home computer to run SPSS from there.  The problem doing it that way is that you have to have a network connection for it to work.  I don't always work where I have access.  That's one of the main reasons I switched to the Pro version.  They just came out with a MS Surface Pro 2 with LTE.

Full disclosure:  I have no affiliation with Microsoft other than they have taken too much of my money over the past years.

I am not aware of SPSS running on any tablet-specific OS (e.g., Android, MS Windows RT).  If you don't mind using a tablet to remotely connect to another computer that can run SPSS, you can use Teamviewer software, (http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/mobile-app.aspx) from and Android, iOS, Windows Phone, or Windows 8 / RT tablet.

If you can get a tablet that runs linux, Mac, or Windows, PSPP is a free SPSS "clone" you can try (https://www.gnu.org/software/pspp/get.html).  It is not as powerful as SPSS, but it is similar in appearance and function.

I hope this helps,

Fred Weigel

Re: SPSS for tablet computers

Dear Fred

Thanks for this useful response. I understand that similar features apply to use of Stata (in particular, according to Timberlake Consultants, there is no Stata App, for Stata to operate on a talbet, the tablet must run on Windows 8 Pro and for this, one needs  a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet) - worth knowing if you are contemplating choice of tablets and already use both Stata and SPSS!

Thanks for mentioning Windows PSPP.  I must look further into the utility of this package.

Best wishes

Margaret

While there is no tablet-specific version of Statistics, you can export the Viewer contents in htm or mht format with Statistics 22 and view and edit these files on your tablet.
From the help,
"Web Report. A web report is an interactive document that is compatible with most browsers. Many of the interactive features of pivot tables available in the Viewer are also available in web reports. You can also export a web report as an IBM Cognos Active Report."

OMS also supports this format.
