SPSSINC MODIFY TABLES bug

boschw

Hi all,

I’m creating a large set of tables where I use the MODIFY TABLES extension command extensively to format the tables after they’ve been created.  I’m having problems when I hide columns that are nested under another variable.  In v21 this works fine, but in v23 it does not (though it does run much faster).

Instead of wrapping the label text for the outermost variable into 2 or more rows of text in the now narrower label space, the label text just disappears entirely in the SPSS Output Window.  When I export the table to pdf there is text there, but it doesn’t wrap.  Whatever doesn’t fit in the width of the column is just cut off.  “Battered women’s shelter” appears as just “Battered…”.

Worse, it also seems to “lock” the table and SPSS.  That is, if I double click to edit the table to fix the labeling, I can no longer edit anything in the Output window, nor can I close the output window or SPSS without using the Task Manager to just “End process” on SPSS.

If there’s no way to fix this MODIFY TABLES behavior, I know I can manually insert line breaks in the label to force the wrapping and that might fix part of my problem, but hopefully there’s a fix as I use this command often on multiple projects.
