Hi,
I need to find a solution to script/syntax the difference between 2 versions of a dataset. We have an âoriginalâ file â let us call it dataOrig.sav and another file called dataEdited.sav., which is a heavily edited version of dataOrig.sav. Now, unfortunately the person doing all of these edits, did all of these edits directly in SPSS data editor, and did not save the syntax session log file etc while doing his edits. So a lot of edits, that are probably valid, but not documented through i.e. a syntax or script file. Further, a new version of dataOrig.sav has been created, let us call it dataOrig2.sav, which contains some updates to dataOrig.sav Iâm now faced with the challenge of merging all of the edits made through dataEdited.sav into the new dataOrig2.sav file. What I need to find a solution for is. 1. Create a syntax or script file that properly depicts the changes from dataOrig.sav to dataEdited.sav 2. Run this syntax/script on the new dataOrig2.sav I have looked at SPSS data entry etc, but that can not create a syntax file that can update the new dataOrig2.sav file. Each record has a unique ID, and this id must be used to identify cases, while only updates should be included in the script. I.e. if only variables C,D,R,Q and X for case A1098X has been edited the syntax should only update those fields for that case (and not the others, as they may have been updated in the dataOrig2.sav file. I hope this makes sense! Any help, pointers or directions are highly appreciated! Thank you! There is an extension command for SPSS that will compare two datasets. It can compare the variable dictionary, the data, or both. For case comparisons, it uses an id variable to match them up. There is a version called COMPDS that will work with SPSS 16 and a newer version SPSSINC COMPARE DATASETS for SPSS Statistics 17 that is essentially the same functionality but has a dialog box interface as well as syntax.
The output includes a short summary report in the Viewer and, optionally, case and/or variable difference variables created in the primary dataset. Both of these can be downloaded from SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral). They require the Python programmability plug-in.
