Select if not permanent?

J McClure
Hi,
I thought that if I used a select if statement WITHOUT  "temporary"
preceding it that the selection would be permanent.
I used the following syntax Select if (SIWkRating LE 5) AND (MD_SI_C LE
5) and did a crosstabs which showed I should have an n of 346. When I
ran a frequency for MD_SI_C the total was indeed 346. I closed SPSS and
have now reopened it and reran the frequency for MD_SI_C and the total n
is back to 482, the entire dataset.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Jan

Re: Select if not permanent?

Marks, Jim
Did you save the dataset before closing SPSS? If not, you got the old
version of the file when you re-opened

You probably closed the data editor without saving it, so the working file is lost and it remains in its original state.

Make sure you save your transformed file with a new name, otherwise you will lose your original data.  To avoid tears I always advise people to keep at least two copies of their original data on a removable medium or a remote server and also to save all the syntax used to create that and subsequent files.
