Stacked histrogams with logarithmic scale

Jen Badham
Hello all. Sorry my first post is a problem rather than a solution - I
will try and post answers when I become more familiar with SPSS.

I have some very skewed data and wish to use a stacked histogram with a
logarithmic scale on the frequency axis to make it readable. However, the
axis does not appear to scale properly. The logarithmic scale works for
nonstacked histograms but I have to switch to safe logarithmic scale when
stacking (presumably because some bins have 0 members for some groups).

The following test data replicates the problem. Two variables, value and
group. Each () represents one case.
(1 A)(1 A)(1 A)(1 A)(1 A)(1 A)(1 B)(1 B)(1 B)(2 B)(2 B)(2 B)(3 A)(4 A)(6 A)

I am using chartbuilder in SPSS for Windows 15 to obtain a histogram of
value, stacked by group. With a linear y axis, it is fine (the frequency
for value 1 is correctly shown as 9). However, when I use the safe
logarithmic scale, this test data shows a frequency of about 40 for value
1.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Jen
