Stat.exe

Roger Cupido
Dataset of 3000 records

Computer Spec:
i7 2.1ghz
4gb ram
640 hd
Windows 7 Pro

SPSS Statistics V19.0

Running a frequency on two variables creates gradually more than 30 instances of stat.exe in the task mananger slowing the computer completely down.

Can someone explain why this is happening and why does SPSS uses so much of the computers memory in general and how to prevent this from happening.

Thanks

Hmmm, this is strange behavior and you should probably contact tech support
so they can figure out what's going on in a remote session. The FREQUENCIES
command is extremely fast and 3000 records is trivial. Does this occur with
other procedures or just FREQUENCIES. What is your exact syntax?

I saw this behavior a few times, but I could never pin down the cause.  If, however, you have not rebooted your computer recently, I suggest doing that as that seemed to me to be a possible cause.  Windows tends to run out of various resources after a while and needs a cleanup.  And, of course, 30 instances of SPSS will tie up a lot of memory, almost all of it going to waste.
