SPSS has a lovely dichotomy calculator. It works like this:
Compute newvar=(expression that would=1 in a dichotomy).
So for your example, you could use:
Compute q1=(sum(1a to 1e)>=2).

Dear list,
I would like to write some syntax to scrore the variable described
below.
I have a question with a yes/no response, where yes = score of 1 and no
= score of 0. However, the question actually has 5 sub-questions (1a to
1e), and the person only scores an overall 1 (yes) for question 1, IF
they answer yes (so a score of 1) to 2 or more of questions 1a to 1e.
So... I would like to write some syntax that would give the case a score
of
1 on Question 1, if they have scored 1 on any two or more of questions
1a to 1e.
