Time-dependent variable handling in SPSS Cox survival?

Dear SPSS users,

Can anyone point me to a solid yet easy to understand reference of how the time-dependent variable function works in Cox survival analysis.

I have am looking at the influence of diabetes drug exposure on likelihood of developing cancer.  If I provide data on exposure in Year 1, Year 2 to Year n does the time-dependent variable only select the level of exposure in the Year of event/censor or are the previous years' exposure levels somehow factored into the analysis?
