Time series analysis with random intervals for data points

Matthew Fuller-Tyszkiewicz

Hello list.

I have a query regarding the appropriateness of using time series analysis when the data points are collected at random intervals. My study is looking at fluctuations in mood throughout the day and trying to link it to gym attendance and exercise. Each participant will fill out a brief survey via PDA, 7-8 times per day for the duration of one week. The PDA is set to randomly signal participants to complete the survey, but the testing sessions are within the hours of 8am to 10pm.

As the time points will be randomly selected by the PDAs and given that no data will be collected between 10pm and 8am, is it still possible to use time series analysis to determine the extent to which exercise/gym attendance influences mood?

Thanks in advance,

Matt.

Matt:

Be sure and also look at recent studies in social and personality psychology which have dealt with this issue in great detail.
