Total across several scale variables in SPSS

Noel-12
I need to create an average across several scale variables. It feels like I am missing the obvious and overthinking my issue. I am using SPSS 17 and have all the modules available to me.

Thanks in advance.

Noel

My end results need to be the following...

Math - Average
Reading - Average
Art - Average
Biology - Average
Physical Education - Average
Music - Average

Total - Average across subjects

Use the compute statement....
COMPUTE Math_Avg=MEAN(Mathitem1, Mathitem2, Mathitem3).
Compute each of the 6 scale variables this way and then once you have these created, use a final compute statement to create the overall avg of the 6 scales you created e.g.,

COMPUTE Total_Avg = MEAN (Math_Avg, Reading_Avg, etc.).
