Understanding the normal distribution curve on a histogram

It's possible to add a normal distribution to a histogram. What exactly
is this doing ?
Is this correct ? The line drawn represents what the distribution would
look like if totally normal.
So it plots the mean & std deviation of the histogram using the normal
density equation / probability density function.

Almost the same as you say, but perhaps slightly different: my
interpretation is that it plots a normal distribution with exactly the
same mean&standard deviation as the data.
