Hi,
Developer Works is temporarily in read-only mode so I am posting this here.
From time to time I get messages about "scarce sytem resources". What is the recommended minimum tempdir size for SPSS v20, taking into account that other programs may also fill %temp%? Matching two files of, say, 2M cases each should certainly be possible. Example error "Saving output file <spv_file_name> was interrupted due to scarce system resources. Retrying."
I was thinking things might also run more smoothly after an upgrade to the latest Java 7 update, however: "SPSS Statistics installs its own Java JRE" (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=14916156). This is the kind of warning (which is really an error) I want to prevent: "Warnings XML parsing out of memory Execution of this command stops."
I reported the first error at Tech Support already. I was hoping an upgrade to a newer Java JRE would make it less memory-hungry.

I don't think upgrading the JRE would make
any difference, and it could definitely cause problems. As Statistics
migrates from one JRE version to another from release to release, we always
find that something gets broken that we have to take care of.
I have not seen the kind of memory error you describe, but the amount of memory that the JRE is allowed to use with Statistics is user configurable. The default setting is designed to ensure that Java does not take over so much memory that other applications are starved, but depending on your OS and hardware, the limit may be too low for you. Look at the Startup Parameters section in jvmcfg.ini in the Statistics installation directory. Experiment with the memory settings to see if that makes the problem go away.
