Using datafile comments

Genevieve Thompson
Hi,

Each time I make a comment in the "data file comment" under utilities, i
loose my work. I know that there's a restriction on the number of words
per line which I have not exceeded. Can anyone help.

If you haven't solved this, here are some questions that could help
us get farther:

. What version of SPSS are you running, on what platform?

. In what way do you lose your work? I assume you mean data; or, do
you lose syntax, or output? Does SPSS crash? Is the active dataset
deleted, or does it remain and is empty? Is it truly empty, or does
it have the variables but no data?

. What does the SPSS journal file show?
It's a good idea to have SPSS always keep a journal. To do so, choose menu
Edit > Options > [tab] General; check "Record syntax in journal" and
select "Append". Fill in some convenient path, and filename (default
is "SPSS.JNL").

Like most menu commands, "data file comments" is implemented by
executing syntax, though the syntax isn't displayed. Here's what's in
my journal, when I try Data File Comments:

* Data File Comments.
PRESERVE.
SET PRINT OFF.
ADD DOCUMENT
'Data File Comments: I wonder how this translates into syntax? '
  'as Document?'.
DISPLAY DOCUMENTS.
RESTORE.

That's pretty innocuous on the face of it; but if it's blowing your
file, something's badly wrong.

(The journal will have any error messages, as well; that can be
illuminating, especially if they are suppressed from the output.)

-Good luck to you,
  Richard
