Utilities, Variables

Alice Sullivan
I'm using SPSS 15, and have found that the 'Variables' utility no longer
works as it used to in previous versions. Whereas you used to be able to
type in the variable name to get information on the variable, now you have
to use the variable label, as the variable name isn't displayed. For me,
this defeats the object, as I usually use this facility to find variables
when I only know their name, not their label. Is there a way of changing
the settings so that you can search by variable name?
Many Thanks,
Alice

Do you mean the variables box in the Utilities listing on the toolbar or
something else? If so, you can control this (as well as other things) by
going (from the tool bar in any window) Edit --> Options. This brings up a
series of tabs, the first of which is labled General. On the top left is
'variable lists' with two lines of choices. Choose variable names in the
first line. I think the default is 'file order' in the second line.

You might also want to consider the Viewer tab, lower left corner which is
about whether commands are echoed in the output. You might also want to
consider the Output labels tab which controls whether variable names,
variable labels or both appear in output tables.

Thanks for this. However, the 'utilities, variables' dialogue in version
15 still isn't working as it did on previous versions. In the past,
clicking under 'variable' and typing the variable name took you to the
variable information for the relevent variable. Now this no longer
functions. (It just beeps at you if you try it). I used to use this all
the time, so I'd be really grateful if anyone knows of a solution!
Thanks,
Alice
