"Value Labels" is recoding my data!

Colleagues and Gurus:

I am running SPSS V19, Release 19.0.0.

I have a data set that I update quarterly and on which I run some basis analyses. No big deal. It's worked well. Until today.

I accessed my data today and found that the numeric values in variable fields for which I had (an existing) Value Labels set (and other variables for which no values were set, such as Age) were showing up as the labels themselves. This is occurring despite the data type of "Numeric" and is completely new! It didn't do this last January when I ran the analysis.

For example, I have Variable 1 (variable name is Respect), Label is Treated w/Respect, Value Labels 1="Very Poor" 2="Poor" 3= "OK" 4= "Good" 5= "Very Good"

As a result, every numeric variable in my data set, regardless of whether or not I have a Value Label set (and regardless of the Value Label), is recoded to the corresponding value label, and shows up as a string in my Data View!

When I delete the entire column of Value Labels, all of the data in the Data View go back to the correct numeric values.

This phenomenon occurs when I initially open the data set. The syntax editor is empty.

This worked fine last January.

What have I done to cause this, and how might I correct it?

You have managed to click the Value Labels toolbar button in the Data Editor (looks like a balance).  Click it again, and the labels go away.
