I recently purchased SPSS Graduate Pack 16.0.0 for Macs.
I am having problem with what seemed like a simple function in the
previous versions of SPSS. This concerns assigning variable names to
several variables. I imported my data from an Excel file. Many of the
variables are entered as numbers but are categorical. Each number
refers to an object. On the Variable View page I indicated that those
variables were "string" and "nominal" variables. Then for each
variable of interest, I entered in the "Variable Label" column and
assigned the labels to each variable. However, even after making
these assignment, SPSS does not treat my number variables as these
labels. It does treat them as nominal as indicated in a frequency
analysis. But that analysis only listed the numbers not name labels.
Interestingly, if I type over these numbers in the Data View, it will
read my typed in number as the label. Somehow, it only assigns the
label if I now physically type the data in. I would prefer not to
have to retype in all of my data since there is a lot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Debbie
