WG: Reading Russian Text

Hello all,
 
I've got some difficulties to read Russian text from an Excel file into SPSS.
All I get ist
 
p_0001    q05
ua4c4bb5 ?? ?????? ????????? ?????????? ?????????????, ...
u229c9ac ???????? ????? ?????????? ???????
 
Any ideas what's going on?

Very likely, your SPSS locale is set to one that does not support Russian characters.  The question marks mean that the characters read could not be converted to your current SPSS character set.

 

If you have SPSS version 16 or 17, the simplest solution is to set Unicode mode on.  SET UNICODE=ON or do the equivalent in the Edit>Options>General tab.

 

For older versions, or as an alternative, set your SPSS locale to Russian.  SET LOCALE=RUSSIAN.  In versions prior to 16, you might also have to change your font settings.

 

Do this before reading the Excel file.
