What is the difference between a "Markovian model'" and other multi-level models?

Max Gunther
Dear SPSS folks,

Does anyone have a simple explanation for what makes a model
"Markovian<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Markov_model>"
rather than just a multi-level (i.e. HLM, SEM, etc?) Is it that Markovian
models have are more exploratory in nature, i.e. less defined?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Max
