Why is this?

So, why does the column counter in the syntax editor begin at 0 instead of 1. And, if you use the column counter values to define column locations in a data list command errors are generated. Specifically,

>Error # 6045 in column 19.  Text: 0
>Invalid start column specified in a range specification.
>Execution of this command stops.

Could column 0 be a java improvement? An improvement that has not wiggled its way through data list?
