Does SPSS assign the ranks automatically or do I need to go through my data and convert it manually to the ranking system (1 for the lowest score, 2 for the next lowest, etc.)? Thank you!

This sounds like a question that can be answered empirically!  I.e., why don't you try it both ways, and see if it changes the results you get?  (If your actual data file is so large to make this tedious, generate a small dataset to try it out with.)  ;-)
