Wrong number of cases on frequency table

sgcorreia14
Dear all,

I am really new to SPSS and I'm using PASW Statistics 18. I am only doing simple frequency analysis to start with, but even here I'm having trouble. For some reason the number of cases on the frequency tables does not match the actual number of cases in my data. I have already double checked that there are no extra live cells in my Data View. Can you suggest any other possibilities as to why I'm getting N = 138 even though there are only 100 cases in my data?

Thank you in advance!

Are both the Valid N and Total N 138?

Are the data weighted by a weight variable?

Have you used the WEIGHT command, by any chance (DATA - WEIGHT CASES in the menus)?

Hi Bruce & Rick,

Thank you for your replies. The Total N is the same as the Valid N. As to the weighting, I have not run a command like that; when i follow the menu the option ticked is "Do not weight cases" and it tells me that the current status is "data weighted by status".

Many thanks,
Sara

If "Weight on" appears in the status bar of the Data Editor, then the data file is currently weighted -- but the fact that the dialog indicates the current selection is "Do not weight cases" is a bit odd.

Weight conditions are saved with the data; so weighting is on every time you re-open a data file until you explicitly turn it off. Try running this command in a syntax window: WEIGHT OFF.

If there was an annual award for the post expressing the most delight, I think Sara would be a strong contender.  ;-)

You still have to click OK option, even when the current status is 'Do not weight cases'
