I would consider neither Excel nor Access to be one the "statistical
packages". The Data Analysis pack that comes with Excel is trash. The
native statistical distributions functions built in Excel are quite
inaccurate. If you are willing to replace then by Ian Smiths' VBA
functions then you can try to use Excel for very simple tasks (and you
should not even trust the STDDEV function, BTW). Excel is cheaper than
SPSS, agreed, but Excel is not an statistical package, while SPSS is not
a spreadsheet.

Regards,
Marta

Re: best way to learn using SPSS

news
In reply to this post by ashfaque
Ashfaque ,

If you have a lot of energy you might learn R, using a Graphical User
Interface like RCmdr together with FactoMiner. Basically, you should be
an evaluation pro & a programmer if you want to use R to the full.

There are other free data mining programmes in which you might use parts
of it for your work, like Rapid-Miner, Orange, WEKA, Tanagra.

If you have to work with nominal and ordinal data, multiple responses
and table analysis, SPSS is the answer. There are lots of beginner
guides for SPSS in the social sciences that you will find on the
Internet and that you can well use for evaluation.

SPSS should provide a more stable product than the open source
alternatives. There is a link between SPSS and R in the latest versions.

Excel or any other spreadsheet can help you prepare the data and also do
some table analysis but that's it. Access or any other db might prepare
your data if you have a complicated data structure but it is not made
for analysis.

In short, the alternatives are SPSS or R.

R has a steep learning curve, SPSS a steep price.

Have a good choice,
