List readers,
I have been trying to use the distance measures in SPSS (via the
PROXIMITIES command) for some nominal and ordinal data. I am not that
familiar with these types of distance measures, and I have a fundamental
question. The data set that I've been working with contains data for
each respondent where the data set variables are ordinal, nominal, etc.
I've been calculating distances directly from the data for the
multidimensional scaling PROXSCAL command. However, the documentation
for the distances refers to "count" data. So it is not clear to me
whether I can work with my data set, as is, or whether I need to
generate frequencies/counts first before trying to calculate distances?
Is there someone who is familiar with this procedure that can explain it
to me, or point me to an example of calculating distances with
nominal/ordinal data?
Thank you for your time and consideration,
-Paul
