calculating skips in provision of benefits

Rodrigo Briceño
Dear all. I have a database with records of households perceiving some
benefits. The period for registering the receipt of benefits is
bi-monthly, so you can have for each household numbers from 1 to 6 each
year. I have records from year 2002 to 2007. My question is the
following: I want to create a subsample of records for those records
that do not have continuous reception of benefits. Here an example of
what I want:

hhnumber year   bimester
1             2002             4
1             2002             5
1             2002             6
1             2003             1
1             2003             2
1             2003             3
1             2003             4
1             2003             5
1             2004             1
1             2004             2
1             2004             3
1             2004             4

As you can see this HH didn´t get benefits on 6th bimester of 2003, so I
want to assign a value of 1 to this HH (I need it in my subsample of
HH). What I was thinking was to calculate the difference between
bimesters (on a row basis) since in any case that I found a figure diff
from 1 I will have skips from perception of benefits. The thing is how
to do that in SPSS, and also facing the issue that between last bimester
of one year and beginning of the other I will have certainly numbers
diff from 1.

Thanks for any help that you can provide me...

Re: calculating skips in provision of benefits

Marks, Jim
Aggregate to add a variable with the number of records per year, then compute the flag.

Not tested:

AGGREGATE OUTFILE = * MODE = ADDVARIABLES
  /BREAK = hhnumber
  /subsample = N.
RECODE subsample (30 = 0) (1 THRU 29 = 1).
EXECUTE.
