I wonder if there is a way in SPSS 17 to compare two large data files to
determine if all the variables in one are also in the other, and if not
to identify the variables that are not duplicative.   hs

The SPSSSINC COMPARE DATASETS extension command (with dialog box) can compare variable dictionaries and/or cases.  You can get it from SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral).

It requires the Python programmability plug-in, but no Python knowledge is required to use it
