Caleb Ouma
Hallo all,
I have data in  SPSS format but it is in flat mode. How do I transform it to rectangular format.
Thanks

Hi,

Have a look at the VARSTOCASES command in the syntax guide. I don't think you can access it through the GUI.

Cheers!!

Please tell us what you mean by "flat mode".  Can you provide a small
example?

Yes, as Art Kendall wrote, please make clearer what you mean. ('Flat'
and 'rectangular' seem to mean the same thing.)

It's likely that VARSTOCASES or its counterpart, CASESTOVARS, will do
what you want. Both can be accessed from the menus, choose
Data > Restructure...
then select "Restructure selected variables into cases" or
"Restructure selected cases into variables".

Both commands are complex. Often, it's useful to paste the syntax
from that the menus generate, and then modify it.

Also, finally, think carefully what you want to do. You may find it
useful to read the recent thread "Reading in Hierarchical Data",
begun Wed, 29 Oct 2008.

-Best of luck,
  Richard
