copy/paste problems to and from syntax

John F Hall

I’m trying to copy a list of string varnames to syntax.  Most of the time SPSS accepts Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V to copy/paste.  Sometimes that doesn’t work, but right click copy, Ctrl+V does, or right click copy, right click paste or right click copy Ctrl+V.  Today this doesn’t work at all, even if I work from Notepad rather than Word or Excel.  Is there any particular reason for this?  If I can’t find a solution I’ll have to type dozens of names into syntax manually.  Closing SPSS and re-opening might work, but that’s not the point.

Yep - had this problem occasionally in v21-22, previously mentioned bug (see https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=77777777-0000-0000-0000-000014940180), closing and reopening does work, nothing else seems to, annoying.

You can always use Edit>Copy and Edit>Paste.  Also, if you haven't rebooted your system in a while, that might help.

Re: copy/paste problems to and from syntax

Match over (result withheld for soccer fans who don’t know the final score) but my original question remains unanswered.  I’ve rebooted twice, once yesterday and once today after software updates, so why does this happen when editing syntax?

The question arises because I have  a large file containing string variables, many of which have blank fields and blank labels.  I wanted syntax to specify missing values for these.   Copying cells from the Data Editor in Data View yielded nothing, so I had a guess at:

missing values

<stringvarlist>

(' ').

. . which seems to work.

Some of these variables have missing alpha values of different lengths starting with the letter Z.  Is there a quick way of specifying such character strings in syntax?  I can then add them to the missing value specs.  If not, it’s not such a chore as I can copy them from the spv, enclose them in primes and enter them into a missing values command.

Re: copy/paste problems to and from syntax

Rick Oliver-3
You want any string that starts with z to be assigned user-missing? If you don't need to preserve the original values:

do repeat x=<varlist>.

if char.index(x, "z")=1 x="<somestring>".
end repeat.
missing values <varlist> "<somestring>".

Re: copy/paste problems to and from syntax

John F Hall

Rick

Thanks, but it’s not my data and I need to preserve the original values.  I’ll use FREQ to list the values for the few variables involved.  It may be safer to make copies of the variables and try syntax out on them first.  Eventual syntax probably needs to look something like:

Missing values

<var1>

(“z~~~1”, z~~~~2” ~~~)

<var2>

(“z~~~1”, z~~~~2” ~~~)

Re: copy/paste problems to and from syntax

Christopher Stride

Agreed, this is a ludicrous problem that I occasionally run in to, usually after several pastes and/or where I have a particularly long file. But that shouldn't be an issue! I'm guessing it's something to do with the clipboard not being emptied. Every time I've contacted spss about it they've claimed it's a non-existent problem, but I've seen enough other posts about it to be sure it isn't!

Just confirming that I too have run into this problem, and also concluded
that SPSS is not allowing the contents of the clipboard to be replaced when
I copy in another application--and sometimes even when I copy within my SPSS
syntax file.

I don't know if anyone will be able to remember this far back, but was this
a problem in pre-Java versions of SPSS (i.e., prior to v16)?

Cheers,
Bruce

At least in Windows the clipboard is an OS function.  Its purpose is to allow
cut/copy/paste *between and within *apps.

Thanks for that Art.  Just a note that in order to get it to work, I had to
retype the quotes in the pasted command.  I.e., I had to change this:

cmd /c “echo off | clip”

to this:

cmd /c "echo off | clip"

Instead of closing and re-opening which will fix the problem, you could try
this:

On the syntax file do a copy "Ctr+C" to an "empty" selection (do not move
the cursor, this is a just blinking cursor), and paste Ctr+V in the same
place. This will restart the functionality without re-starting the spss.

Works since this problem started few years ago. I am in SPSS 24, and worked
in older versions as well -I think starting on version 22.
