difficulties in using SpssClient for the first time

Warren Chrusciel
I am just trying to run the little snippet of syntax below in
SPSS 18.  I understand that it is not really going to do anything.
However, I am having problems trying to use SpssClient so I wrote this
minimal amount of syntax just to try to isolate the problem.

BEGIN PROGRAM.
import SpssClient
SpssClient.StartClient()
SpssClient.StopClient()
END PROGRAM.

When I try to run it, I get the following error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<string>", line 3, in <module>
_SpssClient.JCAdaptorException: (0, 'Port Handshake with JavaClient
failed.', '')

Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the way SPSS
or the SPSS-Python integration package is set up on my computer?

Also, I tried to post this message yesterday on the listserv but I did not
see it there when I checked this morning.  How long should I wait after
posting to check for a message?  I understand that there sometimes might
be a delay between posting and when the message is actually added to the
list.  However, 16 hours seemed excessively long.

Thank you,

I don't think I saw this one until this morning, either; but as far
as I know, postings are generally getting through promptly.

Is anyone having experience to the contrary?
