Dear list: In SPSS 15 one could have a data window open and then click on Analyze and then Frequencies and then drag the cursor over the variables of interest and then move them as unit to the box for analyses. When I try to do the same thing in SPSS 16 I cannot do it. Has anyone else had this problem? martin sherman

Hello Marty,
I am able to ctrl-click and/ or shift-click on several variables on the left side of the frequencies dialog box and then either use the blue arrow or just drag and drop the variables from the left window to the 'variables' window. When I L-click and drag the highlighted variables over to the variables window (inside the frequencies dialog box) they become semi-transparent until they are dropped into the variables window at which point they render fully. Are you not able to do that, or am I missing something? OK- never mind- I just fired up 15 and see that there is indeed a difference. It appears that you can't left click once and select (by sliding down the list) several variables (not on my machine anyway), but you'd need to use ctrl and/or shift-click.

The drag & drop model in SPSS 16 is a little different from 15. You can use shift-click or ctrl-click to select variables in a list, and then the drag gesture can move or copy them to another list.
This works consistently in all the dialog boxes in 16. In SPSS 15 some dialog boxes supported drag and drop and other did not. However, you could not generally both drag to create a selection and drag to move the variables. The SPSS 16 model is that dragging is used to move/copy variables, not to select them. Also, when the gesture would not be ambiguous, you can double click a variable to move/copy it to another list. This works in a source list when there is only one target list or in any target list. It can't work from a source list in a dialog with multiple targets, since it would be ambiguous where the variable should go. Jon: OK, so in SPSS15 I could left click on a variable and then move my cursor down covering the next say six variables and then I could click the arrow to bring the variables over to the procedure box. This capability does not appear to be available in SPSS16. Am I correct? thanks, martin

In 16 you use shift click to select a group of variables (or control click) or hold down the shift key and cursor through a list. Then you can either drag the group or click the arrowbutton.
