Hello all,
I'm using SPSS 17.0.2 for Mac with the latest patches. It's been three times now that I have lost datasets (after saving religiously). I go to open the file and the Text Wizard opens saying : "The specified file is empty. Select another text file" (even though it's a .sav not a text file). Fortunately, I always back up on a USB stick. In the Mac finder, the file will be listed as having 0 KB [it doesn't even revert to a previously saved version!) It's not always the same file, just the one I worked on last. It only happens once in a while but it's quite jarring all the same. I've googled it and checked the SPSS support--there was one similar case but the person was trying to open a file from a previous version which is not my case. Has anyone ever encountered this? You do not open a .sav file with the Text Wizard. You open it with the GET
command or File>Open>Data. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Libby Sent: Thursday, May 14, 2009 8:06 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: empty file message Hello all, I'm using SPSS 17.0.2 for Mac with the latest patches. Thanks but I wasn't trying to open it with the Text Wizard. I was trying to open it the usual way in SPSS (File, Open etc) but the Text Wizard window came up for no reason saying the specified file was empty (for some reason it's being referred to as a text file when it is not). Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Dear All, i also got the same problem. Please help me out too. The file size is 1.8 mb and it has 7 days continuous data. We dont have any backup of it. Is there any way to recover this damage or regenerate the data? Your reply will be highly appreciated. Thank you. |

For those who are not reading via Nabble, the context for Reema's post can be viewed here:
http://spssx-discussion.1045642.n5.nabble.com/empty-file-message-td1088150.html Reema, judging from those earlier posts, I gather you are trying to open a .sav file via File > Open > Data, but that the Text Import Wizard dialog is appearing. Is that correct? If so, at what point does it appear? Are you clicking on "Open" or "Paste" after selecting the .sav file you wish to open? Have you tried opening the file via syntax rather than via the GUI? Does that work? If you don't understand the last question above, open a new syntax window (File > New > Syntax) and paste the following line into it: GET FILE = "MyFolder/MyFile.sav". Then change "MyFolder" to the path to the folder where your file is stored (e.g., "C:/MyDocs/SPSS/Project7/Data/"), and change "MyFile" to the name of your data file (e.g., "Demographic Info"). Then highlight that line of syntax and run it (see Run options at the top of the syntax window). HTH.

What happens if you open the folder on the USB stick, then double-click on
the *.sav file? If it opens properly, have you tried File > Save As > newwfile.sav in a different folder on (say) desktop: then close the file and try re-opening it with a double click again? I saved my data with the current SPSS am using.
https://dataanalysiswriting.com/ <http://https://dataanalysiswriting.com/> I got the same message while trying to open it. "the spss file is empty" I tried this syntax method of opening the file and got this message "1 GET FILE The specified input data file is neither an SPSS Statistics data file nor an SPSS/PC+ data file. " Still wondering why this happens yet I saved the file yesterday with the same spss version. Today cant open the sav file but opens other sav files.
