excluding cases test-by-test - nonparametric two sample tests

Thomas Burley
Hi,

I am doing some nonparametric two-independent-sample tests using SPSS
15. I'm trying to figure out what exactly the option exclude cases
test-by-test means.

Here's the output file syntax for one that I did:

NPAR TESTS

  /M-W= Ammonia_Nitrogen_LOG DO_LOG Conduct_LOG Flow_Inst_LOG N02_3_LOG

  PH_LOG TEMP_LOG Tot_Hrd_LOG Tot_KN_LOG Total_P_LOG TSS_LOG
Turbidity_LOG

  BY ID(2 9)

  /MISSING ANALYSIS

  /METHOD=MC CIN(95) SAMPLES(100000).

so as you can see it's a basic nonparametric test.

All the SPSS help tells me is this:

> Exclude cases test-by-test. When several tests are specified, each
test is evaluated separately for missing values.

This does not make it clear as to how cases are handled if they have
missing values. I understand the exclude cases listwise option, but the
test-by-test option is a little nebulous.

I much appreciate any explanation of this that actually tells me what
the program does when that option is selected!!

Thanks!

Tom -

I believe the test-by-test option will delete cases from analysis based only
on the variables considered in that test (not from all variables selected to
be tested).  If you do more than 1 test at a time, you may be using
different samples test to test, using this method (depending on
missingness).
