Look at CASESTOVARS (or the Restructure Data Wizard).

Subject: importing/transposing data structure
HI,
I have a dat file in which i have a 100 groups of 44 continuously numbered variable id number identifying two variables (which are dimensions).
this is what it looks like (3 columns x 4400 rows):
1 0.12 -0.16
2 1.23 1.25
3 -0.10 0.00
...
44 0.12 -0.16
1 0.14 0.14
2 0.16 0.17
...
44 0.17 1.24
and so.
how could i import and/or transpose this structure so that i have only 44 rows and 300 columns?
any advice would be much appreciated. thanks a lot in advance
