installing case studies/tutorials in version 21

parisec
I had version 21 installed several months ago. I am trying to access the tutorials and cases studies for the first time.

However they will not load. The link opens in chrome, my default browser, then just spins.

Is there something I still need to do in the installation to access these?

TIA

There shouldn't be anything additional you need to do. With version 21, there be a long delay when the help system is launched for the first time in a session. You might try changing to different default browser.

Hi Carol
It takes a full 5 mins to open in Firefox on my system.  It looked to me that it was opening a page on the IBM website. I was looking up the Statistics Coach and when it opened it was not as good as what they used to have in the printed manuals prior to about Version 14, when they took out all the annotated examples and just left them as little more syntax manuals (this is for things like Advanced Stats etc)

See if you can track down one of the older manuals in your library. Failing that maybe try one of Marija Norusis' excellent guides.

Adrian

Re: installing case studies/tutorials in version 21

parisec
thank you.

I have both of these refereces and they are good. in fact, i  put the syntax reference guide on my desktop because i can't get the online one to load.  What i really want to access through is one of the case studies. I went through this several years ago and found it really helpful.  All of the files under "help" are being pulled from my computer name even though it looks like it's pulling them from a website.

I am going to see if the most recent patch was installed. I.T. did the installation.

I also wonder if maybe i need to be more patient! Does it take a full 5 minutes every time you call it up or just the first time?

Thanks
Carol

Re: installing case studies/tutorials in version 21

Barnett, Adrian (DECD)
Hi Carol
Given what I found when I got there, and how long it took, I wasn't keen on doing it a second time, so I'm afraid I can't help on the load time for subsequent sessions. I did try this on two widely separated occasions (months apart) and the load time was consistent.

The lengthy load time made a sort of sense when it appeared to be due to an external website, but if the files are really coming off my own system, it's a pretty poor effort. Starting SPSS 22 seems to take a similar amount of time too. My colleagues and I go make a cup of coffee on starting it, and tend to leave it running overnight so we don't have to wait so often.

Re: installing case studies/tutorials in version 21

Hi Adrian,

The "Statistics Coach" is intended to guide people to a particular procedure, but does not explain how to use or interpret output from that procedure.  The "Case Studies" are probably closer to what you're looking for.

Re: installing case studies/tutorials in version 21

Barnett, Adrian (DECD)
In reply to this post by David Marso
Hi David
I hadn't tried re-loading the Case Studies in 22, given the 21 experience. In the light of what you and Jon have reported about your load times under 22, I just did it again now and it took about a minute (Win 7 Enterprise, i7, 8GB, Intel SSD, Firefox).

Jon says the SPSS load time is probably our virus scanner, which in our case is McAfee Enterprise. It does have the ability to bring my system to a standstill for half an hour during a full scan so perhaps that's what is responsible. However I don't understand why it is only SPSS which takes so long to load. Biggish things like Mapinfo and Office load up as normal, as of course does everything else except for SPSS. Version 21 was the same.  I can't recall at which release this behaviour began but it certainly wasn't always like this.

Adrian,
Hard to say  I tend to boot my system every few days, sometimes only once a week.
Depends upon what kind of crapware decides it needs to be updated and/or whether at some point the system slows to resembling a glacial process.  Meanwhile, SPSS is usually loaded.  I just have the standard Win8.1 virus stuff running (No Norton, McAfee, etc).
