I got the following error message after about 1,000,000 records with about 500,000 records.
>Error # 5841. Command name: SORT CASES BY >Insufficient temporary disk space in which to sort the file. The necessary >space is approximately twice the size of the working file. >This command not executed. Is this an SPSS problem or my network problem? I tried doubling my workspace in spss, but that didn't help. TIA. Hi Sydelle
The space it is talking about is disk space, not RAM (which WORKSPACE uses). The space it uses is typically in a temporary subdirectory in your DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS directory. In an ordinary Windows installation, DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS is on the C: drive, but in some large organizations this may be on a network drive. Wherever it is, there's not enough room on the drive. If it's on a network drive, it may be because the IT droids have set a quota on the space you can have and you've run into it. Or, if it is on your own computer's hard drive, your C: drive may be rather a small one (perhaps because it is actually a partition on a larger drive and the partition is small - the IT droids where I work create a 6GB C: partition in their standard system build, if you can believe it!). You will need to make some room. Often the temporary directory that SPSS uses is full of old files SPSS was using in earlier runs, and has not cleaned up after itself, and this can amount to a significant area. On Windows XP, check in DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\[whatever your username is]\TEMP\ and look for directories with names starting with 'SPSSnnnnnn' (where n is a digit) and delete any not relating to your current session (you can tell from the date/time stamp). The SPSS temporary directories are not the only possible culprits. You may well find other large and un-needed files/directories. That does it. I looked at my C drive and it's pretty full. Thank you.
