intervals for continuous variables

Giuseppina Chiri
Dear list,
My question is in regard to constructing intervals for a continuous
variable.
I have a variable that measures individuals’ total support needs. In this
sample (n=548) it varies from 60 to 141 and it is slightly left-skewed.
I would like to create categories but I don’t know how to do this. Should
I simply look at the histogram and visually decide where there is a
breaking point?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: intervals for continuous variables

Hi Giuseppina,

First, you should tell us why do you need the categories and how many of them do you need. There are many possibilities how to proceed, and the decision between them depends on the purpose of the procedure.

Greetings

Jan
