known v16 issues?

Hoover, Matthew

Hello everyone,

I’m forwarding part of an email I got from a co-worker that is having all sorts of problems using version 16.  I believe they are using 16.0.2 (with the 2 patches).  It is not just one person, but several people here are having issues.  Luckily, I haven’t experienced the issues they are mentioning.  Here are the issues:

Since installing SPSS 16, Alison and I have experienced a number of difficulties working with our files.

Issues we have encountered to date include: random insertion of variables in files (as many as 98 variables in 1 file), difficulty deleting records or variables in files, difficulty merging or copying new records into existing files (sometimes only some of the variables copy even though we are copying an entire record), insertion of random text in string variables (including question marks and in one case a mathematical formula), and twice we have experienced saving disasters that are too complicated to go into.

Has anybody else had similar issues with SPSS 16 or can you offer some advice I can forward on to them?  Any help would be greatly appreciated J

We are having similar issues and when we called SPSS we were told unless there is an error message they are unable to help us! The major issue has to do with saving. We have lost numerous updates made to a large dataset even after consistently saving. The changes would be saved but then when the dataset was opened the next day all would be gone. It has been horrible. I was advised by our  IT person that the actual file may be corrupted so I made a new file with all the same data and will see if that works. Maybe your co-worker can try that also.

I vaguely recall having similar issues, but with an earlier version of
SPSS, v15 I believe. I had a single dataset that was just "cursed" and
when I ran frequency commands random number values would just "appear,"
and if I closed the data and opened it again and ran the same frequency
command I would get a different set of random values. I also recall
something about save commands not working. This only ever happened on
that one dataset, so it may be that a similar thing is happening, if the
problem is restricted to a select few datasets; they may be corrupted
somehow. I would try first of all playing around with some of the sample
datasets that come with SPSS and see if the problems occur there. If
not, then maybe try exporting the data to a csv file or something and
then re-importing it back into SPSS.

I’ve had that exact problem with v16 and thought I was delusional for a while.  But, I found that if I use “Save as” instead of “Save” that it usually saves the changes.   I’ve seen a huge difference between the two ways to save, for whatever reason – so now I only use Save As

Re: known v16 issues?

Lemon, John S.

We have had problems with saving some files for a number of versions but it has been almost impossible to reproduce consistently to enable us to provide sufficient evidence for SPSS to investigate but after a lot of work we have discovered:

·         It happens more frequently when saving to a network drive

·         If the network is ‘loaded’ for example by a large download or upload then the problem is more likely to happen.

·         The size and / or the ‘shape’ of the file can affect it – a file that doesn’t save OK will suddenly work if an extra column or rows are added.

·         It happens more frequently with smaller files but can happen with megabyte sized files.

·         If you save frequently when making changes to the file then the problem does not occur so frequently.

·         Saving the file to a local disc before saving to the network reduces the likelihood of it happening – you also have a ‘backup’

I will say that with 17, touch wood, we haven’t seen the problem so much – having said that it will most probably be reported to me tomorrow L

Best Wishes
