Re: loop and do repeat problem with thousands of unique values to insert

Only 25 pages? ;-)
I don't believe there is any hard limit to the number of recode clauses.
It might take awhile to process and might even appear to go AWOL and then come back.
Someone at SPSS might be able to answer this definitely.
Certainly more than several 1000.  I've thrown some pretty nasty stuff at SPSS over the years.
What we have discovered today is there are many ways to solve such a problem.
The problem with tons of IF statements is the need to test every variable against every IF statement for every case.  RECODE will be more efficient.

Hmmm, the good ol' WRITE OUTFILE. I remember I generated 25 pages of IF
statements and my colleague printed that syntax. *sigh* so many trees.

I wonder if there's a limit to the number of recodes within one RECODE though.

 Cheers!!
Albert-Jan

Re: loop and do repeat problem with thousands of unique values to insert

Maurice Vergeer
Dear all,

my apologies for my delayed reply on this matter. I got side tracked
by other business.

Anyhow, thanks for all your creative thinking. In the end I used 14
separate match files, which was easiest and quickest in the short run.

Indeed the sorting was the hard part, but we know that from SPSS.
Although, the 14 files to match had increasingly fewer cases, as well
as removing all redundant variables .

thanks to David Marso for his extensive example. I'll look further
into it, because my problem won't be the last one.
The same holds for Albert-Jan and his solution, reminding me to get
into python again, if time allows.
As well as Art Kendall's suggestions and all the others.

Best wishes,
Maurice
