merging files & transforming scales

Nomi-2
Hello all,

I have two questions:
1) I'm trying to merge two files where the identifier is a string variable.
SPSS "goes through the motions" though I keep getting blank columns where
my new variables (that were added from another file) should be. Is this
because the key variable is defined as string? Is there anyway to get
around this without changing the ID variable?

2) What transformation should I use to change a 1-4 scale to 1-5?

Thanks!
Nomi

Re: merging files & transforming scales

Maguin, Eugene
Nomi,

You've probably thought of and checked issues. But, just to ask. Is the 'by'
variable, the variable you are using to match the two files, the same format
length (e.g., A12) in both files? Does the case of the key variable match on
both files? What error messages have you gotten?

Is it possible that you need to execute the match files command? Is
'transformations pending' showing at the bottom right center of the grey
spss status bar?

On question 2. There is nothing you can do. However, if you could, what
procedures did you have in mind using?
