merging files with string IDs

Scott Roesch
Hi all:

I thought that it was possible to merge two files using a string ID. I am attempting to add variables with a string id that takes the following form (e.g., BA40015). When I run the Merge Files procedure it appears to be running the procedure and the variables do appear in the "new" data file. However, values appear for the new variables I am adding to the original file. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Scott,
I don't understand the problem.  If you are MATCHing files-you want values to appear int he new variables that you add to the original file.

Please provide syntax and perhaps examples ...
