Have you installed the SPSS 18.0.3.4 HotFix? That appears to have released
to address the same problem you describe. See Resolution number 91842 on
support.spss.com for details.

Problem Description: I am working with Statistics 18.0.x on a Macintosh OS
X 10.5 (Leopard) or 10.6 (Snow Leopard). I have either installed the Java
Update 8 for Mac OS X 10.5 or the Java Update 3 for Mac OS X 10.6 provided
by Apple. However, when I try to create any chart in Statistics the chart is
no longer drawn, I get an error:
"The JVM cannot be started".
Resolution Subject: This problem has been addressed in the 18.0.3.4 HotFix
Resolution Description:
A recent Java update for Macintosh OSX 10.5 and 10.6 appears to have
adversely affected some functions within the Statistics 18 product. We have
issued a 'hotfix' to address adverse behaviors resulting from this update.
Please see the instructions below, paying special attention to 'Note 1' and
'Note 2'
NOTE 1: To apply the following procedure, you must have administrator
privileges.
NOTE 2: To apply the following procedure without adverse consequences, the
'Release Version' of your Statistics product must be '18.0.3'.

I am running PASW 18 on a macbook pro. Everything works fine except
PASW wont plot. When I ask it to plot I get the following message in
my output file "Could not start Java virtual machine. Chart will not
be drawn." I have updated my software and even tried to update java
but the message was that my version of Java did not need updating. Any
ideas?
